The Canadian government is currently looking at revising the labeling of food in Canada. You can read about their initiative, a Discussion Paper for Food Labeling Modernization here.
You can have a say in this process by completing the questionnaire for consumers and stakeholders here.
This is a chance for Canadians to let the government know that we would like GMO – Genetically Modified Organisms identified.
If you don’t know what a GMO is and why it would be important to identify them you can watch the video below to gain an understanding. The video is highly sarcastic and satirical but certainly gets a number of key points across about what is really going on with highly industrialized food and the lack of transparency in that food system.
For my part, I’m going to keep shopping at the farm gate and at the farmer’s market as much as possible. I like to shake the hand of the person who grows my food and have a direct discussion about how they did that. I will read labels but I know when I do that I’m not getting the whole story and therefore I can’t really make the best decisions for my health and the health of my family.
I want to savour my food and I want to savour my life without Genetically Modified Organisms in them. That’s why I filled out the questionnaire. I wonder how many of you feel the same way?
