Fact: There are 3200 kids in Calgary that go to school hungry every day.
If somebody told you that you could feed a hungry child a healthy lunch for a month by spending 20 dollars would you do it?
If somebody told you that with that same 20 dollars you could feed a hungry child for a month and get a fun calendar of local chefs who a) don’t take themselves too seriously and b) take feeding kids very seriously – would you spend that 20 dollars to feed those kids?

What is @bb4ck?
Brown Bagging it for Calgary Kids (BB4CK) is an organization that feeds the 2500 children that go to school hungry each day in our city. It’s sad that this situation exists. It is wonderful that some people are dedicated to doing something about it. BB4CK doesn’t just give handouts. They give a hand up by working within communities to provide community development. And, they don’t let children go hungry in the meantime.
Cooks love to feed people and they hate to see anyone, especially a child, go hungry.
When Kevin Kent, the owner of Knifewear stores across Canada, found out that a team of Edmonton chefs had posed partially clothed to raise money for food charities last year he was inspired to bring that idea to Calgary and to raise money for BB4CK. Kent put up the money to pay for the printing costs for a Calgary project and enlisted the talents of his friend, the photographer, Jeremy Fokkens (I’ve written about Jeremy’s abilities with Human Connections previously). Fokkens volunteered his time. Twelve male chefs from Calgary were enlisted to pose shirts off (for better or worse). With costs absorbed, all proceeds from sales will go to the charity.

There’s so many reasons Calgary is Canada’s Chowtown.
The fact that our chefs can access Japanese knives at Knifewear to make all the chopping they do easier – and therefore make the long hours they spend cooking for us more enjoyable – must surely be one of the reasons the food in this town rocks.
The motto of Knifewear is “sharp knives rocks”. I think the chefs using them and their food also ROCKS.

SAIT Polytechnic Culinary School Alumnus Kevin Kent cut his cooking teeth with Fergus Henderson at St. John in London, England and at River Cafe in Calgary. He started selling knives to chefs in Calgary from his backpack and now owns five Knifewear stores across Canada. He’s one of Calgary’s culinary mavericks.
Japanese knives help me savour it all. Right now I’m savouring the idea of … buying myself another one.

The Calgary debut of the film will take place on Monday, Oct. 20 at 7 pm at the Plaza Theatre (1133 Kensington Rd. N.W., Calgary.) Tickets are $10 apiece – in advance at Knifewear in Inglewood or at the door as long as they last.
